Newark has declared a "Code Red" for Thursday and Friday due to extreme heat forecasts, with temperatures expected to reach the 90s and a heat index as high as 99 degrees. The advisory will be in effect from 11 a.m. on August 1 to 8 p.m. on August 2.

A Code Red is issued when the heat index is anticipated to reach 100 degrees or more, posing health risks, especially to seniors and those with chronic health conditions. Residents are urged to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.

Newark officials advise checking on vulnerable neighbors and note that air quality may deteriorate, affecting people with asthma, heart or lung disease, and young children. During the Code Red, homeless shelters will extend their hours and increase capacity, and residents can text "Path Home" to 855-11 to get help for unsheltered individuals.

Cooling centers and pools will be available to provide relief from the heat. For more information on these resources, residents can contact the Office of Homeless Services at (973) 877-9481.

Public safety officials recommend staying indoors, using air conditioning, wearing light-colored clothing, drinking plenty of water, avoiding strenuous activities during peak heat, and never leaving children or pets in cars.

As Mayor Ras Baraka emphasized, “We need to look out for one another during these extreme conditions and ensure everyone stays safe and healthy.”
