Newark Awards $2.3M to 8 Black-Owned Businesses

The City of Newark and Invest Newark have committed $2.3 million to support eight Black-owned businesses through the Retail Reactivation Initiative, aimed at revitalizing the Arts & Education District.
Mayor Ras J. Baraka praised the initiative for enhancing Newark's vibrancy and supporting local entrepreneurs. The funds, derived from Urban Enterprise Zone reform, will aid businesses with fit-out, furniture, and equipment costs. The awardees include:
- Newark Culture Club ($120,540): A performance space and craft cocktail bar.
- Lashed Queens ($38,500): A beauty bar specializing in skincare and aesthetic services.
- Uncle Willie’s Wing ($229,495): A bar and grill with event space for local artists.
- Consigliere ($87,500): A wine and tapas bar highlighting African diaspora wines.
- Casa De Flora ($101,185): A flower boutique and coffee café.
- Katherine’s Restaurant ($550,000): A restaurant and brewery.
- Equal Space ($625,000): A co-working space for diverse entrepreneurs.
- Delta’s ($600,000): A Southern cuisine restaurant with live entertainment.
“These businesses and new lights reflect our commitment to innovation and community,” said Evan Weiss, CEO of Newark Alliance.
